NOSSCR Lifetime Achievement Award Winner James Mitchell Brown’s dedication to helping people with disabilities stems from deeply personal experiences:
His father was a dry cleaner who actively employed people with disabilities. At age 16, James was entrusted with his father’s car to drive to school twice a week. Each trip required first picking up his father’s disabled employees and taking them to work, then returning them home at the end of the day. These experiences taught James at an early age the importance of helping individuals with disabilities and instilled in him a lifelong commitment to advocacy and service.
James cousin was misdiagnosed with a serious illness at age three. By the time meningitis was correctly diagnosed, his cousin’s brain development had been severely impacted. The family faced tremendous challenges: his aunt’s husband abandoned her, requiring her to move in with James’ grandparents. His mother and her sisters took an active role in caring for the cousin. Growing up witnessing the struggles of a severely disabled family member inspired James to dedicate his career to helping disabled individuals receive the support and rights they deserve.
